Dear guests,
Welcome to the web site of National Hospital Organization Hokkaido Medical Center. Our hospital is a member of the largest hospital chain in Japan, a private sector of Japanese Government, which consists of 140 hospitals nationwide. Our hospital is located in Sapporo City and one of the core referral hospitals in Hokkaido Island, providing our regional citizens with a large variety of medical care. As well as common medical treatments, we are also offering special medical care for muscular dystrophy, pediatric chronic diseases and other neurological disorders with a special needs school to support continuous education for young patients. Our surgical unit is equipped with high-tech medical devices such as a mobile CT navigation system for spine and brain surgeries and robot-assisted surgeries will be launched in the middle of 2024. We are treating any patients suffering from difficult pathologies with a multidisciplinary team approach.
Manabu Ito, MD, PhD
Director, National Hospital Organization Hokkaido Medical Center
Hokkaido Medical Center has been designated as a Regional Medical Support Hospital and a Hospital for Backward Support of In-Home Care to meet the needs of acute stage medical care in the region, and is also a base hospital for the treatment of intractable diseases (neurological intractable diseases, psychiatric disorders, pediatric chronic diseases, infections) in Sapporo City and the whole Hokkaido area. It is also a base hospital for the treatment of intractable diseases. Furthermore, it is also a base hospital for disaster medical care.
Fourteen years have passed since the Hokkaido Medical Center was established on March 1, 2010, through the merger of the National Hospital Organization Nishi-Sapporo Hospital and the National Hospital Organization Sapporo Minami Hospital.
The 643 beds include 410 general beds (30 emergency), 21 tuberculosis beds, 40 psychiatric beds, 116 muscular dystrophy beds, and 56 beds for severe mental and physical disabilities, ranging from tertiary emergency hyperacute care to neurological intractable diseases, pediatric chronic diseases (with a special needs school, pediatric renal disease center, pediatric genetic metabolism center). It is a "super hybrid" hospital that can meet safety-net medical needs ranging from emergency medical care to chronic pediatric diseases, psychiatric complications, tuberculosis, muscular dystrophy and severe mental and physical disabilities. As a new complex hospital with functions that are rare nationwide, it is a hospital that is attracting much attention.
The tertiary emergency center is equipped with a rooftop helipad and is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by emergency physicians, cardiologists, and neurologists. It also provides secondary emergency services such as pediatrics, gastroenterology, cardiovascular, respiratory, gynecology, and injury/disaster care.
As a designated Hokkaido Cooperative Hospital for Cancer Care, the Cancer Center and the Endoscopic Minimally Invasive Surgery Center provide multidisciplinary cancer treatment.
Our hospital has special units for tuberculosis patients and dialysis patients. The Neuromuscular Center serves as the core hospital of the Hokkaido Medical Network for Intractable Diseases (Hokkaido Base Hospital for Intractable Diseases) and accepts patients from all over Hokkaido as well as local residents. The Department of Psychiatry is taking on the challenge of treating physical complications, a field in which few medical institutions accept patients. We treat patients suffering from psychiatric disorders with physical complications (cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, trauma, etc.) under a multiple attending physician system. In addition, the Medical Center for Dementia Diseases connects local clinics and psychiatric hospitals, and is working to create a regional network to achieve the ideal dementia care in the future.
In August 2020, the west wing was expanded and the muscular dystrophy and severe mental and physical disability functions of the National Hospital Organization Yakumo Hospital were relocated. Yakumo Hospital has long been highly regarded both in Japan and abroad as a "respiratory rehabilitation and management center for neuromuscular diseases," and the relocation to Sapporo is expected to improve access to specialized medical care.
Human resource development is another important mission of the hospital. We strive to produce higher quality medical professionals by accepting initial interns, providing specialist education for late-stage interns, operating an affiliated nursing school, training highly skilled nurses, and encouraging participation in workshops to improve knowledge and skills in various occupational fields.
Hokkaido Medical Center will support everyone in the Hokkaido Island "from day-to-day to unexpected disasters".
